How you can make Voice calls over the Internet using VoIP

  • You might have heard that using a VoIP product is a good way to get rid of your old copper landline and rather make calls over the Internet, but there are a few questions you’d like answered before you move. Read on for more information.

    What is VoIP?

VoIP is the acronym for Voice over Internet Protocol, which is the technical name for products and services that can make and receive phone calls over the Internet.

What value would a VoIP product bring?

VoIP is the perfect replacement for traditional copper landlines and is ideal for those wanting to move away from old fashioned and often costly landlines. In some cases a traditional landline might not be available and that calls from your cellphone can be costly.

Can you use VoIP products to call locally and internationally?

Yes. You can make calls to landlines, cell phones and other VoIP numbers, both locally and internationally by purchasing local and international minutes. And Mweb VoIP customers can make FREE calls to other Mweb VoIP numbers.

    How can I make calls?

There are 3 different ways you can choose to make VoIP calls.

1: Using a special VoIP handset that looks like a traditional landline phone which plugs into your Fibre or LTE router. Mweb has a range of different phones available which you can purchase when you sign up for an Mweb VoIP number or you can purchase later via the exclusive Mweb customer online store.

2: Use a VoIP App, which is installed on your cellphone or PC. Mweb recommends Zoiper which has a free version, is easy to set up and works on a variety of devices and operating systems.

3: You can you your existing landline handset and purchase an adapter.

    How much does it cost?

Depends on the number of local minutes you want to use a month. Mweb has a range of products from 150 to over 1 000 local minutes a month.

International calling rates depending on the country you are calling and are displayed per country on the VoIP page on the Mweb website.

You can purchase local minutes top ups and International calling credit via your online account.

Can I keep my landline number?

You can apply to retain your number in a process called number porting. If you want to retain your number, then give us a call and we’ll take you through the process which can take some time and does depend on the status of your current landline.

What do I need to get started?

3 simple steps to start using VoIP.

1: You need a Fibre or LTE Internet connection.

2: Purchase an Mweb VoIP local minutes product. Once your purchase is completed, you will be sent a VoIP number, which is your VoIP phone number. (effectively your new phone number!)

3: Purchase a VoIP handset or install the Zoiper App. If you purchase a handset, the set up instructions will be included at the time of delivery.

Where to find your Mweb VoIP number?

This number is sent to you via SMS at the time of sign up and is available in your online account under your VoIP product settings feature.
