Understanding IMAP vs POP

Understanding IMAP vs POP

  • When you add Mweb Mail to a device, you can choose IMAP or POP. Pick the one that matches how you use email.

    IMAP

Keeps mail on the server and syncs it to all devices.

    • Inbox, Sent, Drafts and folders match everywhere.

    • Ideal with Webmail + one or more apps.

    • Works well alongside Quarantine and Spooling visibility in Webmail.

    • Uses encryption for secure access.
      Best for: multi-device use.

    POP

Downloads mail to one device. Depending on your app, it may remove messages from the server after download.

    • Your device keeps the master copy.

    • Sent items may not appear in Webmail.

    • Optionally “leave a copy on the server” for a number of days.

    • Uses encryption for secure access.
Best for: a single computer with local storage and backups.

    Mobile and Outlook Options

    • ActiveSync: syncs Mail, Calendar and Contacts on Android/iOS.

Switching from POP to IMAP (Safe Method)

    1. Add the IMAP account alongside the POP account in your mail app.

    2. Create matching folders under the IMAP account if needed.

    3. Drag-and-drop mail from POP folders into IMAP folders to upload to the server.

    4. Wait for upload to complete; confirm in Webmail.

    5. Remove the POP account once everything is visible in Webmail and other devices.

  • With IMAP, choose a storage size that fits your needs (10 GB, 25 GB, 50 GB).For sending, always use SMTP port 587 with authentication. If a recipient doesn’t get your email, ask them to check Spam/Junk and Quarantine.
